Toubkal Winter Trek Morocco8 DAYS, 7 NIGHTS
Day 1: Marrakech
Flight to Marrakech (depending on the chosen option). Reception at the airport and installation at the hotel. According to the time of arrival, free visit of the city.
Day 2: Imlil - (1750 m)
Visit the souks and the old town with a licensed professional guide. After lunch at a local restaurant, transfer by minibus to Imlil, the "Chamonix" of Toubkal, through the gorges of Moulay Brahim and the village of Asni. From Imlil, a short walk leads to the very comfortable cottage at the foot of Toubkal at berber village, where we will spend two nights.
Day 3: Tizi Mezzik Ascent (2520 m)
Day of acclimatization and fitness in the beautiful valley of Imlil. After crossing several villages, a clear path leads to a pass, the tizi (local name) n'Mzik, a little over 2500 meters. This type of trail gives a first glimpse of what we will discover the following days: often stony, but well traced, and with patches of snow.
In general, the lunch, carried by a mule, is taken at the pass. Ability to climb on the rumps above the pass for a superb view of the two valleys. Back to Aït Souka.
Walking time: 4 to 5 hours approximately / M and D: 800 m.
Day 4: Trek to Toubkal Refuge
The climb to the refuge begins by following the canals that irrigate terraced crops. After the lunch break at the small village (and marabout) of Sidi Chamarouch, the mountain is more arid. The snow is usually at the rendezvous, in this case, carriers take over the mules. Overnight at the Toubkal refuge (Neltner refuge - 3210 m). This refuge is now kept all winter; dormitories, toilets and showers, common room with fireplace.
Walking time: around 5:30 / D: 1200 m.
Day 5: Climb Ouanoukrim (4088 m)
The valley of the assif Aït Mizane, first very soft (beautiful view of the Akioud needles at 4030 m), gives access by a steeper slope tizi n'Ouagane (3750 m). A "trail" winds on the ridge and disappears gradually. To 3850 m, sometimes it is necessary to help hands to pass (small cracks, gendarmes to work around, blocks to overcome), playful and without particular difficulty. The continuation is on a gentle slope, on stabilized screes of dark and hard lava, snowy in winter; a remarkable panoramic route. We climb first until the Timesguida n'Ouanoukrim, "the mosque of Ouanoukrim", and once returned to the saddle between the two summits, it is tempting to climb also to Ras Ouanoukrim (again, it may be necessary to help yourself a little with your hands). Night in a shelter.
Walking time: 5 to 6 hours / M: 1100 m.
Day 6: Toubkal Ascent (4167 m)
The ascent of the highest peak in North Africa is without major difficulty. A fairly steady slope above the refuge, in a scree then in a valley more concealed, crowded with large blocks. The final ridge is broad and gradually sets as it approaches the highest point. From the top, very wide view of the plain of Marrakech, Siroua, the great South. Back to the shelter for a well deserved tea ...
Walking time: 5 to 6h00 approx / M and D: 960 m.
Day 7: Toubkal Refuge - Imlil - Marrakech
A pleasant descent takes us from a high mountain scenery to the irrigated valleys that lead by Sidi Chamarouch (marabout) to the beautiful cultivated plateau of Aremd (1900 m). Lunch at the cottage in Ait Souka. Then drive to Marrakech, where we arrive late afternoon. Installation in a hotel ***, in the immediate vicinity of the Djemaa el-Fna square. Farewell dinner (rather goodbye) with the guide in a riad.
Walking time 3 to 4h00 / D 1200 m.
